Nettle, stinging or Nettle is a perennial plant that grows in the tropical and temperate desert, and was imported to Brazil and other parts of South America. On leaves and stems are stinging hairs.
The stinging sensation of the leaves is caused by different chemical elements present in the plant including formic acid, histamine, serotonin and choline. Besides these factors, the Nettle leaf is rich in minerals, chlorophyll, amino acids, lecithin, carotenoids, flavonoids, sterols, tannins and vitamins. The root contains sterols, however, fatty acids, polysaccharides and isolectine. Several elements in the phyto-chemical plant have demonstrated antiviral actions (against the HIV virus and other upper respiratory tract) and immunostimulant (probably against lupus).
The long traditional use of this plant as an anti-inflammatory in the cases of rheumatism and arthritis has been confirmed by numerous clinical research. Some research has suggested that this anti-inflammatory action could be attributed to the property to stop the production and action of inflammatory factors by certain immune cells.
In 1990, it was validated using another traditional Nettle, ie the one for allergies and rhinitis (a common inflammatory disorder that causes nasal congestion and sneezing, and itching, and often caused by allergies) on a sample of 69 patients who have been given an extract of Nettle, it was an alleviation of symptoms in 58% and 48% of patients stated that Nettle was more effective than many other remedies.
Recent studies (in 2000 and 2002) have also reported that an aqueous extract of Nettle is capable of lowering blood pressure, reduce heart rate and has a diuretic action. One of these studies reported that the root of Nettle acts better than other drugs in reducing pressure, increasing diuresis and sodium excretion. In these studies, was also shown as a painkiller, sedative, as well as inhibitory against convulsions induced by drugs and lowering body temperature.
The last area of research Nettle focused on its usefulness in the treatment of inflammation of the prostate (prostatitis) and benign prostate hyperplasia. So far they have been conducted over 20 studies in which the roots of Nettle (alone or combined with other herbs) has been shown to improve symptoms in both diseases. While the efficacy of prostatitis Nettle is due to its documented anti-inflammatory properties, with regard to benign hyperplasia, which seems to work Nettle hormonal level.
The hyperplasia is caused by hormonal imbalances of testosterone and estrogen. Nettle that it seems to act by blocking certain chemical processes related to these hormones and are involved in the development of iperplasia. Several studies have demonstrated the beneficial effects of Nettle. In a study has been documented as the extract of the roots of Nettle can inhibit the growth of prostate cells by 30% in just 5 days and inhibit hyperplasia of 51.4%. In a study of 134 patients with hyperplasia, the administration of 300 mg of Nettle root has reduced the need to urinate during the night in just 28 days.
Note that the same hormones have effects on both hair and hair in men than in women. In fact, the hair loss in men and women is linked to excess levels of dihydrotestosterone. Although there are still clinical studies indicate that if the roots of Nettle can prevent hair loss, research suggests that the root of this plant may block the conversion of testosterone into dihydrotestosterone.
As for the folk medicine, Nettle has been used for centuries as a diuretic, for blood, for arthritis and rheumatism. Externally it is used to improve the appearance of hair and is thought to be a remedy against fatty hair and dandruff.
Nettle has a history of use. Already in the first century, two Greek trustees reported the effects of diuretics and laxatives Nettle, and it indicated as a useful remedy nnei asthma, pleurisy and spleen problems. In early American medicine, the bandages soaked in an infusion of leaves and stems were used to stop bleeding. Nettle leaves were also recommended by the famous naturalist Eull Gibons as food and as an aid in weight loss.
In recent years, more and more consumers and editors have experienced the many uses of Nettle for prostate problems, for arthritis and inflammation in general, for allergies and hair loss. This greater understanding of the uses of Nettle, was followed by a greater marketing: the root, the leaves and the grass is sold whole in many shops in the form of tinctures, capsules, and tablets. It's important to remember that the root is useful for benign prostatic hyperplasia and hair loss, while the leaf for inflammation (including prostatitis), allergies and as a natural diuretic for individuals suffering from hypertension.
